They are mainly responsible for filtering waste products, excess water, and other impurities out of the blood. These toxins are stored in the bladder and then removed during urination. The kidneys also regulate pH, salt, and potassium levels in the body. They produce hormones that regulate blood pressure and control the production of red blood cells. The kidneys even activate a form of vitamin D that helps the body absorb calcium.
Most kidney diseases attack the nephrons. This damage may leave kidneys unable to remove wastes. Causes can include genetic problems, injuries, or medicines. You have a higher risk of kidney disease if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a close family member with kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease damages the nephrons slowly over several years. Other
The most common form of kidney disease is chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease is a long-term condition that does not improve over time. It's commonly caused by high blood pressure. High blood pressure is dangerous for the kidneys because it can increase the pressure on the glomeruli. Glomeruli are the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys where blood is cleaned. Over time, the increased pressure damages these vessels, and kidney function begins to decline. Kidney function will eventually deteriorate to the point where the kidneys can no longer perform their job properly. In this case, a person would need to go on dialysis. Dialysis filters extra fluid and wastes out of the blood. Dialysis can help treat kidney disease, but it cannot cure it. A kidney transplant may be another treatment option depending on your circumstances. Diabetes is also a major cause of chronic kidney disease. Diabetes is a group of diseases that causes high blood sugar. The increased level of sugar in the blood damages the blood vessels in the kidneys over time. This means the kidneys cannot clean the blood properly. Kidney failure can occur when your body becomes overloaded with toxins.
According to Ayurveda, CRF is a disease of Mutravaha Srotas. Though all three Doshas as well as all the Dushyas are involved in the disease, Kapha is responsible for blocking microvessels and developing microangiopathy. Vata is responsible for the degeneration of the structure of the kidney. According to Ayurvedic principles of management of the disease, tissue damage can be prevented and repaired by Rasayana drugs because they have the capability to improve the qualities of tissues and hence increase the resistance of the tissues. On the other hand, the blockage can be removed by Lekhana drugs having a scraping effect on blocked channels.
Kidney stones are another common kidney problem. They occur when minerals and other substances in the blood crystallize in the kidneys, forming solid masses (stones).
>Kidney stones usually come out of the body during urination. Passing kidney stones can be extremely painful, but they rarely cause significant problems.
According to Ayurveda, when there's an imbalance in the Vata Dosha levels, the body's Kapha composition may dry out. This can lead to kidney stones.
In Ayurveda, kidney stones are referred to as 'Ashmari.' This Sanskrit word is made by joining two words - 'Ashma,' and 'Ari,' where Ashma means stone and Ari means enemy.
Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to managing and treating kidney stones.
Painful urination can be a sign of infection, kidney/bladder stones (calculi), or allergic or other irritation. Males with enlarged prostates may suffer from candida infections due to urinary obstruction. Females may have burning urination due to urinary tract infection, or irritation of labia majora when postpartum. When the blood and urine are 'sweet', or when urine is stagnant for too long bacteria overgrowth may occur. Dysuria can be caused by potassium sensitivity, which stimulates spasms of urinary muscles.
Cystitis is defined as the inflammation of the urinary bladder or the urinary tract. This is mainly caused by bacterial infection. The bacteria involved usually reside in the rectum, colon, and vagina. These bacteria then invade the urinary tract and cause infection along with inflammation. According to Ayurveda, cystitis is compared with Mootrakrichha. Elimination of urine is the function of apana vayu. When due to certain reasons apana vayu gets vitiated such as dry foods, excessive consumption of alcohol, excessive exertion, excessive food intake, and indigestion; then it causes problems in urination or mootrakrichha.
